Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to contest certain rulings from the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
