Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
