US and UK Alert of Major E-Visa Security Compromise in Somalia

Approximately 35,000 applicants could be compromised, warns the United States embassy

A major security compromise in the Federal Republic of Somalia's e-visa platform may have exposed private data belonging to tens of thousands of travelers, comprising American nationals, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has cautioned.

The embassy reported had received credible reports that "unidentified hackers" compromised the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, potentially compromising information belonging to approximately 35,000 individuals.

The compromised files being shared on the internet contain full names, images, dates of birth, marital status, residential locations and email information, according to a American diplomatic communication issued on Thursday.

"This information compromise is ongoing and could expose any sensitive details provided to the application portal," the UK has similarly alerted visitors.

"Evaluate the dangers before applying for a digital visa mandatory for travel to the Federal Republic."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have remained silent on the breach. Nevertheless the government has moved visa application system away from evisa.gov.so to etas.gov.so, without issuing a public clarification.

"While Embassy Mogadishu is unable to confirm if personal information is part of the breach, travelers who have requested visas through the electronic visa system could be impacted," the official communication stated.

Regional Implications

The revised application procedure mandates every visitor, comprising individuals from the self-declared republic of Somaliland and the partially independent area of Puntland, to seek travel visas online.

Commentators state visitors have encountered extra fees in particular territories, totaling double charges.

Political Context

Somaliland, that announced sovereignty in three decades ago, administers its affairs via separate governmental bodies but has not been worldwide acceptance. Mogadishu authorities maintains that the region remains part of its sovereign territory.

The claimed security incident adds to persistent conflicts between central government and Somaliland administration concerning jurisdiction of Somali airspace. Although federal authorities regained complete authority of territorial skies in recent years, Hargeisa administration continues to contest the arrangement.

Current Developments

The conflict intensified in recent days as the northern region's leader Abdirahman Irro said the northern territory would reject Mogadishu's electronic visa and instructed that carriers need to acquire permission from northern authorities before entering their territorial skies.

Nevertheless prominent aviation companies have refused to process individuals without Mogadishu's electronic permit.

In the latest development, Somaliland's Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Aadan again insisted that "all visitors to the northern territory will obtain entry permission on arrival", stating Somalia's e-visa system was not safe and alerting that "people's data might be obtained by radical elements" due to using it.

Passenger Complications

The impasse has left some travellers destined for Hargeisa unable to board flights after being denied boarding due to absence of the federal electronic visa.

Hargeisa's air transport representative, Fu'aad Ahmed Nuux, has informed journalistic entities that the regulations - originally publicized previously - became operational on the tenth of November.

He said companies that ignore might be directed to reroute, and stated multiple planes had already been rerouted.

Airspace Control Conflict

Footage distributed by the northern region's air transport department seems to demonstrate territorial flight directors issuing instructions to global airline crews - a development applauded locally as a demonstration of northern self-governance.

However the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority insists it possesses exclusive regulatory authority regarding the federal aviation control area (Flight Information Region), encompassing the whole nation's airspace. It has ordered each flight to ignore any guidance issued by entities except Mogadishu.

It warned that not adhering to federal and global flight regulations could pose security threats and cause "significant legal repercussions".
