Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
