Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
