Britain and America have established a significant trade agreement that will ensure no tariffs on British pharmaceutical exports going into the American market.

The Terms of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to raise expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This pledge ensures that tariffs on these vital exports will remain at nothing for a duration of three years.

This agreement is in response to recent statements to dramatically increase import taxes on patented pharmaceutical imports, with figures discussed reaching 100%.

"This agreement with the United Kingdom bolsters the global environment for new treatments and introduces much-needed balance to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a release noted.

Commercial Impact

Pharmaceuticals are one of the Britain's biggest goods shipped to the US, which is clearly the largest buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data show that in the year prior to last September, the UK exported pharmaceutical products worth billions to the US. This amount represented a significant portion of all goods exports in that span.

"This guarantee protects work, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Detailed British Pledges

The deal includes several specific pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the affordability limit at which it deems new medicines to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a aim to double overall public funding on drugs from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Refund Ceiling: The amount drug companies must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at 15%. Last year, rebates topped 20%.

Industry Background

The deal follows a ongoing dispute between the pharmaceutical industry and the ministers over drug pricing and approval rates.

The disagreement were heightened by arguments that US patients were paying significantly more for the same drugs than people in the UK and Europe.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or scrapped, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been directed toward US facilities.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
